Watch a baby elephant sweetly chase after a flock of birds

Here’s an elephantine antidote to the week’s saddest story.

A tiny newborn elephant sweetly pursues a flock of swallows in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

As the birds flutter around him, the baby dumbo clumsily gives chase, his trunk and tail both waving in the wind as he tries in vain to catch the fast-flapping birds.

Kruger Sightings, the park’s popular Youtube channel, shared the video.

“With this week being so sad after the loss of a great animal, Cecil the lion, we thought we would cheer everyone up with a video that will make you cry of happiness, rather than sadness,” the park staff wrote.

Cecil, it will be remembered, was killed in Zimbabwe by an American dentist, Walter Palmer, who paid hunters to lure the majestic beast off of protected land. They pursued the lion, who was only injured by the dentist’s arrow, then shot and beheaded him and left the rest of his body to rot.

The heartless slaughter earlier this month sparked intense worldwide outrage — and calls for Palmer’s arrest — that spread largely across social media.

The charming elephant video, by contrast, provided a lift.

One user said, “The elephant was later fined 35 peanuts for failure to observe cute limit.”

Said another: “I was considering it, but now I’m sure. An elephant will be my next pet.”

Others used it as yet another forum to take a shot at the lion killer.

“Keep it away from any dentists,” a commenter said.

“I want to help shoo the birds away with this baby elephant,” said another. “But I am afraid an American dentist on a ‘hunting safari’ might shoot me.”
