Hotel lawyer suggests nude video helped Erin Andrews' career

Erin Andrews had to field shameful suggestions Tuesday that a nude video of her shot by a peephole perv actually helped her career.

Under cross examination during a trial in Nashville, Andrews was pelted with questions about her professional success in the aftermath of the video filmed in Nashville’s Marriott hotel and uploaded to the Internet.

“With respect to your career…when you found out about this in July 2009, you were working for ESPN, right?” a defense lawyer for the hotel partners now being sued by Andrews said.

“Yes,” Andrews answered.

“You got a second contract with ESPN, right? And it was a better contract than you had the first time, right?” the lawyer asked. “After that you got a contract with Fox Sports right? And that was a better contract than you had with your second contract with ESPN, right?”

The lawyer then ran through a list of endorsement deals that came after July 2009, including ones with TruBiotics, Reebok and Diet Mountain Dew.

“Your income has gone up substantially since this occurred,” the lawyer finally said, to an objection by Andrews’ lawyers.

Erin Andrews testifies on Tuesday in Nashville, Tenn. Andrews filed a $ 75 million lawsuit against the stalker and the owner and manager of the Nashville Marriott.

Andrews answered the questions with calm poise after turning emotional several times earlier in the morning under questioning by her own lawyer.

She broke down repeatedly during her second day on the stand, especially when discussing her personal life and plan to eventually “tackle” having kids.

“What happens when my kids come home from school and they’re like, ‘Mom, kids are saying you’re naked on the Internet,’” she said Tuesday.

“That’s something that’s always in my mind. And I’ll always have to tell my kids, ‘Mommy didn’t do anything wrong. This is why this happened. This is who is accountable for this. And this is why it happened,’” she said.

“The worst part is, the other day, someone mentioned, ‘Is this still going to be an issue when you’re 60?’” she added. “Who’s going to explain it to my grandkids?”

Michael D. Barrett spent 2 ½ years in federal prison after he admitted to shooting videos of Erin Andrews at the Nashville Marriott hotel.

Now suing the stalker and the owner and manager of the Nashville Marriott for $ 75 million, Andrews described how stalker Michael Barrett crushed her sense of personal safety when he demanded a room adjacent to hers in 2008, altered her door’s peephole with a hacksaw and shot video without her knowledge.

She said the hotel failed to provide adequate security.

“They told him I was there and they put him next to me,” she testified Tuesday.

Andrews, 37, broke down crying as she described how the video has affected her romantic relationship with hockey star Jarret Stoll.

She said when former NFL star turned TV personality Michael Strahan arranged her first date with Stoll, she almost turned it down. First dates paralyzed her with “obsessive thoughts” about what the man and his friends might know or think about the video, she said.

“I always have this baggage. I don’t want to put speculation out there but I feel like a lot of men say, they just want an easy girl. They want a girl that doesn’t have a lot of drama. I have drama. And I don’t want to talk about it. I just want to act like I’m fine, you know, everything’s good.”

Attorney Marc Dedman questions sportscaster and television host Erin Andrews on Tuesday in Nashville, Tenn.

Andrews said she feels bad Stoll has to deal with the aftermath of the hotel incident.

“I feel really guilty. He didn’t know me before this happened,” she said.

“To try to explain to someone who has questions about why I have trust issues, why I’m insecure, why I’m humiliated, why I’m embarrassed, why I am obsessive about checking the Internet, it’s hard,” she said.

“I feel sad because I think he would have loved the girl more that was there before this happened. And I feel very guilty about that,” she said, breaking down.

“I don’t like to talk to him about this. I want to be the easy breezy girl. I want to be the cool sports reporter, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ host that he’s so proud of. I don’t want him to see this.”

The former ESPN sportscaster said she now compulsively checks her hotel rooms and even booby traps their doors.

“I put a piece of paper down by the door so when I leave, if someone comes into the room I can tell,” she testified Tuesday.

Former ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews had to sit through a brutal cross examination on Tuesday about how a nude video of her actually advanced her career.

She said she “immediately” covers the peephole, checks for small cameras in places like the air conditioner and makes sure the room isn’t adjoining another.

“If I see a room is adjoining, I ask to be taken out,” she said.

The hotel is fighting the case, saying what happened is terrible but the stalker is to blame. It claims the stalker did not ask for Andrews by name. She disputes that.

Barrett, a former insurance executive from Illinois, was sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison after his arrest in 2009.

Andrews said Tuesday that she couldn’t bear to be in the courtroom Monday when the jurors watched the video shot by Barrett.

“I left the room because I was embarrassed,” she testified Tuesday, again breaking down in tears.

“The worst part is when you guys walked past me after you watched it. I was like, ‘Oh, God.’ You don’t really realize how long four minutes is until it’s your naked body.”
