David Wright to begin minor league rehab assignment Monday

As expected, David Wright will begin playing in minor league rehab games on Monday. The Mets third baseman, who is trying to work his way back from a serious back condition, will be the designated hitter in a St. Lucie Mets Florida State League game Monday night. It is the first time he will take at-bats in any game since he left the Mets April 14th game with a hamstring injury.

Wright, who was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis, is then scheduled to play third base in a game Tuesday.

Initially placed on the disabled list April 15 with what the Mets called a “mild strain of his right hamstring,” Wright experienced lower back pain during his rehab and was diagnosed with the degenerative back condition in May.

After learning he had the stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal column that infringes on the nerves, Wright spent months in California rehabbing the back and learning to work with his condition. Stenosis forced both Lenny Dykstra and Don Mattingly into early retirements, and Wright admitted it will change the way he will prepare for games and will also at times prevent him from playing.

Wright, however, said that he expects to be an everyday player when he returns. The 32 year old did concede that he will have to be more open to taking days off to rest as a way to stay healthy long term.

The Mets captain just began doing baseball activities last month and Saturday just completed five straight days of rehab drills, which consisted of hitting, taking ground balls and running. That was his first time going five days straight, a test the Mets wanted to see him pass before allowing him to proceed to games.

Wright is expected to need at least a week of rehab games and most likely 10 to 14 games to ramp back up and be able to return to the Mets lineup.

So far, Wright has missed 102 games.
